Designed in 1962 by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, the Taccia stands as one of the defining objects of twentieth-century Italian design. Its form reads as deceptively simple: a broad, mouth-blown glass diffuser set atop a concave aluminum reflector, anchored to an extruded aluminum body on a nickel-plated base.
The relationship between glass and metal is the lamp's quiet proposition. Light enters the diffuser and is caught by the matte interior of the reflector, which redirects it upward and outward as a soft, enveloping glow. The effect is indirect without being dim, generous without being diffuse. An integrated dimmer allows precise control of atmosphere.
The Castiglioni brothers approached every object as a problem of logic and poetry in equal measure. The Taccia is proof that those forces are not opposites. More than six decades after its introduction, it remains in continuous production by Flos, unchanged in its essential gesture.
