Konstantin Grcic conceived Mayday as a study in functional honesty, borrowing visual language from industrial work lamps and integrating the cord and hook directly into the form. Its longevity in production reflects how thoroughly it resolved its own design brief.

Yes. The handle is designed to hook over a nail, rod, or fixture, allowing the lamp to function as a suspended pendant in addition to standing on a surface or floor. This flexibility is central to the object's original concept.

To mark two decades of production, Grcic revisited the design with a limited edition featuring a die-cast aluminum handle engraved with a unique serial number and his signature, distinguishing it from the standard polypropylene version.

Konstantin Grcic is a Munich-based industrial designer who trained under Jasper Morrison at London's Royal College of Art. His practice, KGID, is known for furniture and objects that treat functional constraints as a primary creative material, with work in the permanent collections of MoMA and the Vitra Design Museum.
