Mezzadro Stool

The Mezzadro was designed by brothers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni in 1957. Though conceived in the late 1950s, it was not put into production by Zanotta until 1970, and it has remained in continuous production ever since.

The seat is adapted from an agricultural tractor seat and is finished in lacquer, available in several colors including orange, red, yellow, white, and black. The stem is chromium-plated steel, and the footrest is steam-treated beech wood secured with a butterfly wing nut.

The tractor seat form was originally engineered for ergonomic support during physical outdoor work, so it offers a surprisingly considered fit for short to medium periods of seated use. It is best understood as an accent seat rather than an all-day task stool.

The Mezzadro is closely associated with Italian radical design and the readymade tradition, drawing on the Castiglioni brothers' practice of elevating found industrial objects through recontextualization. It is a canonical example of what critics would later call 'design as cultural commentary.'

Its bold, sculptural silhouette and strong color options make it a natural counterpoint to more restrained furnishings. Architects and designers frequently use it as a single statement piece in kitchens, studies, or gallery-like spaces where the stool's conceptual history adds a layer of meaning to the room.
