In 1962, Achille Castiglioni posed a question that would redefine domestic lighting: could a floor lamp cast light over a dining table with no ceiling fixture required? The Arco is his answer, and it remains one of the most consequential objects in postwar Italian design.
The base is a solid block of Carrara marble, its corners beveled with quiet care. Its weight is deliberate, a counterpoint to the soaring arc above. A single hole bored through the stone accepts a broomstick, making the piece portable despite its mass. That detail is pure Castiglioni: wit and rigor, inseparable.
The stem rises in polished stainless steel, adjustable along its length to suit the space. At its tip, a perforated stainless steel diffuser scatters light with restrained precision. Nothing is decorative. Every element resolves a problem.
