Mayday Table Lamp
Made by Flos
Designed by Konstantin Grcic
Konstantin Grcic designed the Mayday for Flos in 1999 as a deliberate provocation: a lamp that borrows its logic from the worksite, not the drawing room. The tapered opaline polypropylene diffuser casts a soft, diffused glow, while the integrated handle functions as both a hook and a cord-winder, allowing the lamp to be suspended, set on a surface, or carried from room to room.
What made Mayday radical at its debut was its refusal to disguise utility as ornament. Grcic treated utility as the ornament itself. The form follows its own internal rules with an honesty that has kept it in continuous production for over two decades.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes the Flos Mayday lamp design significant?
Grcic's Mayday rejected the conventions of decorative lighting by treating industrial utility as the primary design language. Its unadorned polypropylene form and multi-functional handle made it a landmark object in late 1990s European design, and it remains in continuous production today as a result.
Can the Mayday lamp be used as a hanging pendant?
Yes. The integrated handle doubles as a hook, allowing the Mayday to be suspended from a nail, hook, or beam. The cord-winding function on the same handle gives it flexibility for surface use as well, making it genuinely portable between contexts.
What type of light does the polypropylene diffuser produce?
The tapered opaline polypropylene diffuser disperses light softly and evenly, reducing harsh glare. The material's translucency creates a warm, ambient glow rather than a directed beam, which suits both task and atmospheric use.
What is the 20th anniversary edition of the Mayday?
To mark two decades of production, Flos released a limited edition Mayday featuring a die-cast aluminum handle in place of the standard polypropylene version, adding a material contrast that underscores the lamp's industrial references.
Who is Konstantin Grcic and what is his design philosophy?
Konstantin Grcic is a Munich-based industrial designer whose work is defined by functional precision and a refusal to apply ornament for its own sake. Trained under Jasper Morrison at the Royal College of Art, he has created some of the most critically recognized objects of the past three decades for brands including Flos, Magis, and ClassiCon.
