Bonsai Table Lamp
Made by Catellani & Smith
Designed by Enzo Catellani
The Bonsai lamp belongs to the Turciù series, the first collection conceived by Enzo Catellani, and it remains one of the most personal expressions of his design sensibility. Where most lighting asks nothing of its owner, Bonsai asks everything: each of its twelve brass flex arms is meant to be touched, bent, and repositioned by hand until the composition feels right.
The structure beneath is waxed rough iron, deliberate in its rawness. It grounds the lamp with a quiet, almost mineral weight that lets the brass arms read as something alive above it. The reference to bonsai is not decorative. It is philosophical: the idea that a form is never finished, that care and intention can be returned to it again and again.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the brass arms on the Bonsai lamp be reshaped over time?
Yes. The brass flex arms are designed to be bent and repositioned by hand repeatedly. The lamp is conceived as an evolving composition, not a fixed object, so the arrangement of light and form can be changed whenever the owner chooses.
What is the Turciù series by Enzo Catellani?
Turciù is the first collection Enzo Catellani designed, and the name is a term from the Bergamo dialect. The series established the workshop's foundational approach: handcrafted metalwork, intimate scale, and a strong preference for warm, sculptural light sources over diffused ambient illumination.
Is the Bonsai lamp dimmable?
Yes. The Bonsai is compatible with a standard dimmer and operates on a 230V power supply, allowing the intensity of its twelve E14 LED bulbs to be adjusted to suit the atmosphere of a given space.
How is Catellani & Smith different from large-scale lighting manufacturers?
Catellani & Smith operates as a small atelier in Bergamo, Italy, producing each piece in limited quantities using artisanal processes. Founder Enzo Catellani oversees production closely, and the studio's output resists the standardization common to industrial-scale lighting brands.
What surfaces or settings suit the Bonsai table lamp best?
Given its variable height of 70 to 80 cm and compact 20 x 20 cm base, the Bonsai works well on consoles, side tables, and desks where its sculptural silhouette can be appreciated at close range. Its warm 2700K output makes it particularly well suited to intimate seating areas and studies.
