Bellatrix
Made by Catellani & Smith
Designed by Enzo Catellani
Named after one of the brightest stars in Orion, Bellatrix announces itself through scale and surface in equal measure. A 120 cm disc of aluminum, lined by hand with gold-colored leaf, becomes something closer to a celestial object than a fixture, its irregular texture catching light in ways no machine finish could replicate.
Enzo Catellani has spent decades developing a singular approach to indirect illumination, one rooted in the belief that light should reveal itself gradually, through reflection and atmosphere rather than direct emission. Bellatrix is a mature expression of that philosophy. Nine LED boards, mounted along a slim brass rod and supported by a brass flex for directional adjustment, cast a warm 2700K glow across the disc's worked surface rather than into the room.
Two surface treatments are available: radial lines that read as hand-drawn striations, and centrifugal curves that introduce a sense of motion and rotation. The disc's reverse is finished in blue, the base in white, lending the piece a considered identity even when seen from oblique angles. A Triac dimmable driver allows precise control over the quality of light.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the diameter of the Bellatrix wall lamp?
The Bellatrix disc measures 120 cm in diameter, making it a large-format piece intended to serve as a primary visual and lighting element within a room rather than a supplementary accent.
How is the gold leaf applied to the Bellatrix disc?
The gold-colored leaf is applied by hand to an aluminum disc with a deliberately irregular surface. The handcraft process means each piece carries subtle variations in texture and reflectivity, consistent with Catellani & Smith's broader commitment to artisanal production.
What is the difference between the two Bellatrix surface versions?
One version features radial lines that appear drawn outward from a central point, giving the disc a calm, architectural quality. The other uses centrifugal curves, which introduce a sense of rotation and visual energy across the surface.
Is the Bellatrix wall lamp dimmable?
Yes. Bellatrix is equipped with a Triac dimmable driver, which is compatible with standard Triac dimmer systems commonly specified in residential and hospitality installations.
Who is the designer behind Catellani & Smith's signature lighting aesthetic?
Enzo Catellani founded Catellani & Smith in Bergamo, Italy, in 1989 and remains its sole designer. His work is defined by an approach to indirect light, handcraft, and the use of precious surface treatments, including gold and copper leaf, that place his pieces at the intersection of lighting design and sculpture.
