Malagolina Table Lamp
Made by Catellani & Smith
Designed by Enzo Catellani
The Malagolina belongs to Catellani & Smith's PostKrisi collection, a body of work centered on the charged relationship between light, shadow, and edge. Its fiberglass shade, finished with the collection's characteristic jagged perimeter, does not simply diffuse light. It sculpts it, casting layered, atmospheric shadows across surrounding surfaces.
Enzo Catellani founded his Bergamo-based studio in 1989, driven by a belief that light should carry an emotional charge. Each piece from Catellani & Smith is produced in Italy with a discipline closer to artisanal craft than industrial manufacturing. The Malagolina reflects that sensibility in its compact scale, its nickel-plated metal base and structure, and the care given to its four distinct shade finishes.
- Natural fiberglass, for quiet translucence
- Hand-painted white fiberglass, for a softened, matte presence
- Silver-colored leaf, for a cooler, more reflective surface
- Gold-colored leaf, for warmth and a decorative depth
A blue wire and nickel and black dimmer complete the composition, small details that signal the considered craft running through every element of the design.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the PostKrisi collection by Catellani & Smith?
PostKrisi is a family of lighting designs by Enzo Catellani that explores the expressive potential of fiberglass shades with jagged, irregular edges. The collection is defined by the way its forms interact with light, producing richly patterned shadows rather than uniform illumination.
What shade finishes are available for the Malagolina?
The Malagolina shade is offered in four finishes: natural fiberglass, hand-painted white fiberglass, silver-colored leaf, and gold-colored leaf. Each finish shifts the lamp's atmosphere considerably, from understated translucence to a warmer, more decorative presence.
Is the Malagolina dimmable?
Yes. The Malagolina is equipped with a nickel and black dimmer, allowing precise control over light intensity and the character of the shadows it projects.
Where are Catellani & Smith lamps made?
Catellani & Smith designs and manufactures its lighting in Grassobbio, near Bergamo, Italy. The studio maintains a strongly artisanal approach, with significant handwork involved in finishing and assembly.
How does fiberglass perform as a lampshade material?
Fiberglass is valued in lighting for its ability to transmit and diffuse light with a particular warmth and softness. It is also lightweight and receptive to surface treatments, which is why Catellani & Smith uses it as a ground for hand-applied leaf finishes in the PostKrisi series.
