Glo-Ball Floor 1

Jasper Morrison conceived the Glo-Ball series in 1998 around a single, precise image: the full moon. The spherical diffuser of the Glo-Ball Floor 1 is hand-blown from flashed opaline glass, then acid-etched on the exterior to scatter light with an evenness that feels less like illumination and more like atmosphere.

The base and stem are painted high-thickness steel, grounded and unobtrusive. A die-cast aluminium support holds the diffuser in place, secured by an alodine-plated threaded ring nut. Every material decision points toward the same end: disappearance. The object recedes so the light can speak.

Morrison's Super Normal philosophy holds that the most resolved objects are the ones you stop noticing. Glo-Ball Floor 1 earns a place in the permanent collection of MoMA on exactly those terms. An electronic dimmer on the power cable allows continuous adjustment from 0 to 100 percent, giving the lamp the full range from a soft nocturnal glow to a present, generous light.
