Island Bench System
Made by Established & Sons
Designed by Erwan & Ronan Bouroullec
Island is Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec's 2022 proposal for how people occupy shared space. Rather than treating the bench as a passive object, the system turns circulation zones into places of genuine pause, without closing off sightlines or interrupting the natural flow of movement through a room.
The structural logic is straightforward: long modular units built from cross-laminated timber panels on a steel support frame. From that foundation, the system can be composed with optional upholstery, partitions, side tables, cushions, and integrated charging modules. Each addition changes the character of the configuration without altering its essential calm.
Cross-laminated timber brings both structural integrity and warmth. The material reads as considered rather than decorative, and its natural variation gives each installation a quiet individuality.

Established and Sons has long worked at the boundary between furniture and architecture. Island reflects that sensibility: it is less a product than an instrument for shaping how people gather, rest, and move through a building.

Frequently Asked Questions
What materials make up the Island Bench System?
The primary structure uses cross-laminated timber panels supported by a steel frame. Upholstery, partitions, cushions, and table surfaces are available as optional additions, allowing the material palette to be adjusted to the specific environment.
Can the Island system include integrated charging?
Yes. Integrated charging modules are available as part of the Island Bench System's modular specification, making it well suited to office lobbies, airport lounges, educational buildings, and other settings where powered seating is practical.
How does the modular configuration work?
The system is built from long modular bench units that can be combined and scaled to fit a given space. Partitions, tables, and upholstery are added or omitted per configuration, and the system can be reconfigured over time as the patterns of use in a space change.
Who are Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec?
Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec are French brothers based in Paris, widely regarded as among the most significant designers of their generation. Their work spans furniture, lighting, textiles, and large-scale installations, and is held in the permanent collections of major museums worldwide. Their designs for Erwan & Ronan Bouroullec consistently explore the relationship between object, space, and the people who inhabit both.
What environments is the Island Bench System designed for?
Island performs well in any transitional or communal interior where informal gathering and circulation coexist. Offices, corporate lobbies, university buildings, cultural institutions, and hospitality environments are typical applications. Its understated form and scalable logic allow it to function without competing with the surrounding architecture.
