Ruutu Vases
Made by Iittala
Ruutu, the Finnish word for diamond, arrives as a study in productive restraint. Designed by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, the vase distills geometry to its most considered form, its angled silhouette shaped entirely by the breath and hands of skilled glassmakers at the Iittala factory in Finland.
Each piece is mouth-blown into a steel mold and polished by hand, a process that draws on seven craftsmen and twenty-four hours of work per vase. The result carries the warmth and slight variation that only mouth-blown glass can produce. No two pieces are identical.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the Ruutu vase require seven craftsmen to produce?
Mouth-blowing glass into a steel mold demands a coordinated sequence of skilled hands, from gathering and blowing to shaping, transferring, and finishing. Each stage of the Ruutu's production requires a specialist, and the hand-polishing alone is a distinct craft discipline. The twenty-four-hour process reflects the cumulative precision of traditional Finnish glassmaking.
What does 'Ruutu' mean and why did the Bouroullecs choose it?
Ruutu is the Finnish word for diamond, a reference to the vase's characteristic faceted silhouette. The Bouroullec brothers are known for finding form through reduction, and the name reinforces the geometry at the heart of the design.
How does mouth-blown glass differ from machine-made glass?
Mouth-blown glass retains a subtle organic quality, slight variations in wall thickness and surface that no industrial process can replicate. These qualities give the Ruutu vase a warmth and depth that shifts with light and viewing angle.
What design awards has the Ruutu vase received?
The Ruutu vase received both the iF Product Design Award and the Red Dot: Best of the Best distinction in 2015, two of the most rigorous international recognitions in product design.
Who are Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec?
Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec are French brothers whose collaborative practice, based in Paris, has produced some of the most considered furniture and objects of the past two decades. They work across scales and materials, always with an emphasis on proportion, quietude, and the relationship between object and inhabitation.
