Mexique Coffee Table
Made by Cassina
Designed by Charlotte Perriand
In 1952, Charlotte Perriand traveled to Mexico as an advisor on craft and industrial production. The work she produced there carried the weight of that exchange: forms shaped by artisan tradition and sharpened by modernist discipline. The Mexique Coffee Table is one of those works.
Reissued by Cassina within its I Maestri collection, the table arrives in two expressions. The first pairs a solid American walnut top with a matt black lacquered steel base, the warmth of the grain held in precise tension with the geometry of the metal. The second, finished in Glossy Petroleo, deepens the surface into a rich lacquer while preserving the same architectural clarity of form.
Perriand never treated materials as ornament. The contrast here is considered, even structural: two sensibilities, one resolved object.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the origin of the Mexique Coffee Table design?
Charlotte Perriand created the Mexique table in 1952 while working as a design consultant in Mexico, where her exposure to local craft traditions and modernist principles shaped a body of work defined by geometric precision and material warmth.
What materials are used in the Cassina Mexique table?
The table is constructed with a solid American walnut top and a matt black lacquered steel base, or alternatively with a Glossy Petroleo lacquered top. Both configurations reflect Perriand's characteristic dialogue between natural and industrial materials.
Is the Mexique table part of Cassina's I Maestri collection?
Yes. Cassina's I Maestri program preserves and reissues designs by canonical modernist architects and designers, including Charlotte Perriand, Le Corbusier, and Gio Ponti, produced to original specifications with documented heritage.
How does the Mexique table work in a contemporary interior?
Its low profile and clean proportions integrate naturally alongside both mid-century and contemporary furniture. Architects and designers often pair it with sofas of similar lineage - Perriand, Le Corbusier, or Scandinavian modernists - to create a coherent sensibility.
Can the Mexique Coffee Table be specified in custom finishes?
Beyond the standard American walnut and Glossy Petroleo options, Cassina occasionally offers extended finish configurations for contract and trade projects. Inquiry through a design expert is the appropriate channel for bespoke specifications.
