Cab Side Chair
Made by Cassina
Designed by Mario Bellini
Conceived in 1977, the Cab is one of Mario Bellini's most precise propositions. A tubular steel skeleton is dressed in a single continuous skin of hand-stitched saddle leather, held taut by zippers that run discreetly along the inner legs and beneath the seat. No bolts, no external fasteners. The leather itself gives the chair its form and its finish.
Bellini approached the Cab as an extension of the body rather than a surface for the body to occupy. The construction method is borrowed from the tradition of equestrian saddlery, lending the chair a physical integrity that deepens with use. Over time, the leather yields and conforms, carrying the memory of its user. Each chair quietly becomes singular.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes the Cab Chair's leather construction unique?
The Cab's leather cover is a single hand-stitched skin that slips over the steel frame and is fastened by concealed zippers along the inner legs and underside of the seat. The leather functions as both the structural finish and the aesthetic surface, a technique drawn from saddlery traditions rather than conventional upholstery.
Can the leather cover on the Cab Chair be replaced?
Yes. The zipper closure system was designed specifically to allow the leather slipcover to be removed and replaced, making the Cab one of the more practical objects in the canon of postwar Italian design. Replacement covers can be ordered in any of the available leather colors.
How does the Cab Chair age over time?
Saddle leather develops a patina with use, softening and conforming to the habits of its owner. Bellini intended this quality, describing the Cab as an extension of the body. A well-used Cab carries a distinct character that a new one does not.
Is the Cab Chair suitable for use as a dining chair?
The Cab was designed as a side chair with proportions that work naturally at a dining table, a desk, or in a reading area. Its relatively compact frame and upright posture make it as disciplined in a formal dining room as it is in a studio or library.
Who is Mario Bellini, and what is his relationship with Cassina?
Mario Bellini is a Milan-born architect and designer whose work spans furniture, industrial design, and architecture. His collaboration with Cassina, which began in the 1960s, produced some of the most studied objects in Italian modernism. The Cab, introduced in 1977, remains one of the most recognized works from that partnership.
