In 1968, Piero Gatti, Cesare Paolini, and Franco Teodoro proposed something radical: a chair with no fixed form. The Sacco takes its shape from the person inside it, filling around the body with expanded polystyrene pellets to offer a posture that is entirely self-determined. No rigid frame, no prescribed angle. Just adaptation.
That proposition proved enduring. The Sacco entered the permanent collection of MoMA and became one of the clearest expressions of the counter-cultural sensibility that ran through Italian design in the late 1960s. It was informal at a moment when furniture was still largely formal, democratic when design remained largely exclusive.
