LC3 Outdoor
Made by Cassina
Designed by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, and Charlotte Perriand
First conceived in 1928, the LC3 encodes one of modernism's most deliberate propositions: that structure and comfort exist as separate, legible systems. Frame holds. Cushion yields. The two never pretend to be one.
The outdoor edition extends that discipline without softening it. The frame is stainless steel, finished in a textured paint chosen for elemental resistance and visual fidelity to the original's architectural weight. Cushions are upholstered in water-repellent fabric, preserving the generous proportions and tight geometry that give the LC3 its unmistakable silhouette against any backdrop.
Designed by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, and Charlotte Perriand, the LC3 was always about atmosphere as much as seating. Outdoors, that atmosphere only deepens, where light and shadow read directly across its rectilinear form.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes the LC3 different from other Bauhaus-era sofas?
The LC3 is distinctive for its explicit separation of structure and upholstery - the steel frame is fully visible and independent of the cushion masses it holds. This architectural logic, rooted in Le Corbusier's purism, gives the piece a transparency and rigor that most upholstered furniture of the era deliberately concealed.
Is the LC3 Outdoor suitable for year-round exterior use?
The LC3 Outdoor is engineered for exterior environments, with a stainless steel frame finished in a textured paint designed to resist weathering. The upholstery uses water-repellent fabric, though as with all fine outdoor furniture, covering or storing cushions during prolonged exposure to harsh conditions will extend their longevity.
Who are the three designers credited with the LC3?
Le Corbusier, his cousin Pierre Jeanneret, and Charlotte Perriand collaborated on the LC series beginning in 1928, initially presented at the Salon d'Automne in Paris. Perriand's contribution to the ergonomic and material sensibility of the collection has received growing scholarly recognition in recent decades.
What is the Cassina i Maestri collection?
Cassina i Maestri is the designation for Cassina's officially licensed reproductions of landmark designs by architects including Le Corbusier, Gerrit Rietveld, and Frank Lloyd Wright. These pieces are produced under agreements with the relevant estates and foundations, ensuring formal and material fidelity to the original designs.
Can the LC3 Outdoor upholstery be customized?
Yes, the LC3 Outdoor is available in a range of fabric colors and configurations. Specification options are best confirmed through a design professional or authorized dealer, as the full matrix of finishes and fabric selections varies by market and availability.
