Capitol Complex Office Chair
Made by Cassina
Designed by Pierre Jeanneret
Pierre Jeanneret designed the Capitol Complex chair in the 1950s for the civic institutions of Chandigarh, the planned city in northern India conceived by Le Corbusier as a model of rational, humanist urban life. The chair was never simply furniture. It was architecture at human scale, shaped by the same principles of proportion and purpose that governed the buildings it furnished.
Cassina's reissue preserves the defining gestures of the original with rigorous fidelity: the inverted V-shaped legs, the solid wood frame, and the woven Vienna straw seat and back that gave the Chandigarh pieces their warmth and tactile identity. The construction reads as both disciplined and quietly sensuous, a balance that few pieces of the period achieve.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the historical origin of the Capitol Complex chair?
Pierre Jeanneret designed the Capitol Complex chair in the 1950s for the government buildings of Chandigarh, India - a city master-planned by Le Corbusier. The chairs furnished legislative and civic interiors and became inseparable from the city's architectural identity.
How does the Cassina reissue differ from vintage originals?
Cassina's reissue is produced under license with full attention to the original proportions, joinery, and materials, including the woven Vienna straw and solid wood frame. Unlike vintage examples - which vary in condition and authenticity - the Cassina version offers consistent craftsmanship and structural integrity.
What wood and finish options are available?
The chair is available in oak stained black as a standard option, with natural teak, natural oak, and oak stained dark walnut available upon inquiry. Each finish interacts differently with the Vienna straw, shifting the chair's overall warmth and tone.
Is the Capitol Complex chair suitable for a working office environment?
Yes. Though rooted in mid-century civic design, the chair's proportions and construction are well-suited to a working desk or executive setting. An optional cushion is available separately for extended-use comfort.
Why are Chandigarh chairs so culturally significant in design history?
The furniture Jeanneret created for Chandigarh represents one of modernism's most cohesive design programs - objects conceived as part of a total architectural vision. Their rediscovery in the 2000s sparked international collector interest, and institutions including MoMA have acknowledged their place in twentieth-century design history.
