Cab Armchair
Made by Cassina
Designed by Mario Bellini
Conceived in 1977, the Cab Armchair remains one of Mario Bellini's most considered contributions to Italian design. Its premise is deceptively simple: a tubular steel skeleton wrapped in a continuous skin of hand-stitched saddle leather, held taut by zippers concealed along the inner legs and beneath the seat.
There are no exposed bolts, no visible fasteners. Only the quiet confidence of a form that hides its own logic. The leather does not merely cover the chair - it becomes the chair, lending the Cab its characteristic softness of silhouette and a singular sense of wholeness that rewards close inspection.
Bellini approached the Cab the way a tailor approaches a suit: the outer shell is cut, stitched, and zipped into place over the frame, making structure and surface inseparable. The result is an object that reads as sculpture from a distance and as craft up close.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes the Cab Armchair construction unique?
The Cab's defining characteristic is its leather shell, which is stitched and zipped directly over a tubular steel frame, concealing all hardware. The leather functions as both surface and structure, a technique Bellini drew from saddlery and tailoring traditions.
Is the Cab Armchair suitable for dining use?
Yes. The Cab was designed with proportions that suit both dining and occasional seating, and it has been used in residential dining rooms, hospitality settings, and contract interiors for decades. Its upright posture and considered seat height make it genuinely versatile.
How does saddle leather age on the Cab chair?
Saddle leather develops a patina over time, deepening in tone and acquiring character with use. This aging is considered an intended quality of the design rather than a flaw, and many owners regard a well-worn Cab as more beautiful than a new one.
Who is Mario Bellini and why is he significant?
Mario Bellini is one of the most decorated Italian designers of the twentieth century, recognized with eight Compasso d'Oro awards and a permanent collection presence at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His work spans furniture, architecture, and industrial design, consistently exploring the relationship between form and material process.
Can the Cab Armchair leather be maintained or reconditioned?
Saddle leather responds well to conditioning with appropriate leather creams or balms. Cassina recommends periodic conditioning to preserve suppleness and slow surface drying. Because the shell zips off the frame, professional cleaning or reconditioning is more accessible than with traditionally upholstered pieces.
