Copycat
Made by Flos
Designed by Michael Anastassiades
Michael Anastassiades has long been preoccupied with the poetics of objects in proximity. The Copycat makes that sensibility visible: two spheres sharing the same space without quite touching, each one distinct in material and scale, each one dependent on the presence of the other.
The larger sphere is mouth-blown opal glass, diffusing light with an even, atmospheric warmth that neither glares nor recedes. Below it, a smaller solid aluminum sphere grounds the composition, absorbing rather than reflecting, casting a quiet shadow at the lamp's base. The contrast is deliberate. Form and counterform, weight and weightlessness, held in careful proportion.
- Hand-blown opal glass diffuser sphere
- Solid aluminum base sphere in gold finish
- Integrated LED light source
- Inline dimmer on power cable
An inline dimmer on the power cable allows the quality of light to shift with the moment. The gold finish reads as material conviction rather than ornament, consistent with Anastassiades's practice of choosing every detail for its compositional necessity.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the design concept behind the Copycat lamp?
Michael Anastassiades conceived the Copycat as a study in formal dialogue: a large hand-blown opal glass sphere and a smaller solid aluminum sphere occupy the same axis without touching. The pairing explores tension between lightness and weight, presence and restraint.
What type of light source does the Copycat use?
The Copycat uses an integrated LED light source, which works in conjunction with an inline dimmer on the power cable, allowing precise control over the lamp's intensity and atmosphere.
Is the opal glass on the Copycat hand-blown?
Yes. The diffuser sphere is hand-blown opal glass, a process that gives each piece subtle variation and produces a diffuse, even glow rather than a sharp or directional light output.
What finishes are available for the Flos Copycat?
The Copycat is available with a solid aluminum base sphere in a gold finish, which Anastassiades selected for its sense of material weight and studied refinement relative to the translucency of the glass above.
Who is Michael Anastassiades and what defines his approach?
Michael Anastassiades is a Cyprus-born, London-based designer whose practice centers on reduction, balance, and the philosophical potential of everyday objects. His work with Flos consistently prioritizes compositional precision over decoration.
