Captain Flint Outdoor
Made by Flos
Designed by Michael Anastassiades
A cone balanced on its point, suspended from a slender steel rod. The gesture is minimal, almost precarious, and entirely deliberate. Michael Anastassiades designed the Captain Flint as an exercise in equilibrium, where formal tension becomes the source of calm.
Built for the outdoors, this version carries the same restrained sensibility as the interior original, with materials calibrated for exposure. The frame is steel and polycarbonate. The base is solid marble, offered in white Carrara or black Marquina, each with its own geological character and visual weight.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes the Captain Flint design distinctive?
Michael Anastassiades conceived the Captain Flint around a single formal idea: a conical diffuser held in apparent suspension from an articulated steel rod. The composition reads as precarious yet resolves into stillness, with the marble base providing the counterweight, both visually and structurally.
Is the Captain Flint Outdoor rated for all weather conditions?
The outdoor version is constructed with materials selected for exposure, including a polycarbonate diffuser and treated steel rod. It is designed for covered or semi-sheltered exterior environments rather than direct, prolonged rain exposure. Consulting installation guidelines for your specific climate is advisable.
What marble options are available for the base?
The base is offered in white Carrara marble, known for its fine grain and cool luminosity, or black Marquina marble, which has a dense, near-matte surface with fine white veining. Each variety is a natural stone, so individual pieces carry their own geological variation.
Who is Michael Anastassiades?
Michael Anastassiades is a Cyprus-born, London-based designer whose work spans lighting, furniture, and objects. Trained as a civil engineer before studying industrial design at the Royal College of Art, he is known for compositions of extreme reduction, where a single formal decision carries the full weight of the piece. He has collaborated with Flos since 2011.
Can the cone diffuser be repositioned after installation?
Yes. The diffuser pivots on the articulated steel rod, allowing the direction of light to be adjusted. This adaptability is central to the design's concept, giving the owner agency over both the functional and sculptural character of the lamp.
