Gerrit Rietveld designed the Utrecht Armchair in 1935 for the Metz & Co. department store in Amsterdam. It marked a decisive turn in his practice: away from the angular geometry of De Stijl and toward something warmer, more bodily. Where the Red and Blue Chair is a declaration, the Utrecht is an invitation.

The silhouette is immediately recognizable. Broad, horizontal armrests in solid poplar extend with quiet authority, anchoring the form to its surroundings. Beneath the upholstery, a structural core of poplar plywood and solid fir carries generous polyurethane and polyester cushioning, producing a profile that is at once sculptural and deeply comfortable.
