Libreria Pensile Bookcase

Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni approached every design problem as an opportunity to question convention. The Libreria Pensile Bookcase, produced by Cassina, is one of their most direct expressions of that instinct: a bookcase that appears to float, its four oak shelves held aloft by slender steel cables anchored at a single point on the wall.

The suspension principle does more than reduce visual weight. It shifts the shelving unit from furniture into something closer to a spatial gesture, a drawn line in three dimensions. The structure carries its load with an economy of means that few shelf designs have equalled.
