Sestiere Vases
Made by Cassina
Designed by Patricia Urquiola
Patricia Urquiola drew from two distinct Venetian traditions to conceive the Sestiere vases for Cassina: the centuries-old art of Murano glass-blowing, and the morise, the net-like cord technique historically used on the boats and bridges of the lagoon.
Each vase begins as a blown glass sphere, its form shaped by breath and accumulated skill. That volume is then enveloped in a lattice of cords decorated with the bold striped motif that defines the visual language of Venice's waterways. The outcome is a productive tension between the organic and the geometric, softness held within precise structure.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is morise cord and where does it originate?
Morise is a traditional net-like cord technique historically used on the boats, bridges, and watercraft of the Venetian lagoon. It is a form of craft indigenous to Venice, valued for both its structural and decorative qualities.
Are the Sestiere vases handmade?
Yes. Each vase is individually mouth-blown by Murano glassmakers, and the cord lattice is applied by hand using traditional morise technique, meaning no two pieces are precisely identical.
Who is Patricia Urquiola and what is her relationship with Cassina?
Patricia Urquiola is a Milan-based designer of Spanish origin, widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in contemporary European design. Her long collaboration with Cassina has produced some of the brand's most recognized pieces, often bridging craft tradition with architectural sensibility.
What colors are available for the Sestiere vases?
The Sestiere vases are offered in a vivid palette drawn from Venetian craft heritage, referencing the stripe patterns associated with Venice's gondoliers and lagoon culture. Specific colorways are available through the product configuration.
Can the Sestiere vases hold water and fresh flowers?
The blown glass body of each Sestiere vase is sealed and can hold water, making it suitable for fresh or dried botanicals. The exterior cord lattice should be kept dry to preserve the morise construction.
