The shade is made from Japanese washi paper, a traditional handmade paper known for its exceptional translucency, tensile strength, and organic texture. It is hand-crumpled at Ingo Maurer's Munich studio, meaning no two lamps are identical.

Ingo Maurer (1932-2019) was a German designer widely regarded as one of the most original voices in the history of lighting design. Working from Munich, he combined craft, poetry, and technical invention across a career spanning six decades, with works held in permanent museum collections worldwide.

The crumpled washi paper shade scatters light in multiple directions simultaneously, eliminating harsh glare entirely. The quality of illumination is soft, warm, and enveloping, with an evenness that is difficult to achieve with glass or synthetic diffusers.

Its restrained silhouette and organic materiality allow it to sit comfortably alongside both contemporary and traditional furniture.
