Glo-Ball Basic 1

Jasper Morrison conceived the Glo-Ball series around a single, quietly radical idea: that a lamp need not announce itself to transform a room. The Basic 1 is the original expression of that idea, a hand-blown sphere of opaline glass whose acid-etched surface dissolves the light source entirely, leaving only a soft, even luminescence reminiscent of a full moon seen through cloud.

The glass is flashed opaline, blown by hand and etched on the exterior to scatter light without hotspots or directionality. Every material decision reinforces the same discipline: a die-cast aluminium diffuser support, an alodine-plated threaded ring nut, and a base in fibreglass-reinforced polyamide chosen for its precision and weight rather than any decorative quality.

Morrison's Super Normal philosophy holds that the best objects are the ones you stop seeing as objects. The Glo-Ball Basic 1 earns its place in the MoMA permanent collection precisely because it achieves this: presence without performance, atmosphere without gesture.
