Ktribe T1 Table Lamp
Made by Flos
Designed by Philippe Starck
Philippe Starck conceived the Ktribe collection as a study in optical illusion, asking what happens when light becomes its own subject. The T1 table lamp answers through a double-diffuser architecture: a clear outer globe encloses an opal inner diffuser, and the result is a glow that reads as suspended within the form, detached from any visible source.
The hardware, including the base, rod, and diffuser support, is cast from die-cast polished Zamak alloy. This zinc-based material is chosen for its dimensional precision and the quality of its surface finish, which allows the lamp to hold its reflective geometry without visual noise. A matte black nylon cover grounds the base, offering counterpoint to the upper structure's luminosity.
- Double-diffuser construction: transparent outer globe with opal inner diffuser
- Die-cast polished Zamak alloy hardware
- Matte black nylon base cover
- Ambient, diffused light output suited to residential and hospitality environments
Starck's approach with Ktribe sits at the intersection of industrial precision and philosophical wit. The lamp does not simply illuminate a surface. It stages light as phenomenon, making the act of seeing part of the object's identity.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Zamak alloy and why is it used in the Ktribe T1?
Zamak is a family of zinc-based alloys valued for its ability to be die-cast to very tight tolerances, producing sharp, consistent forms and smooth, highly polishable surfaces. In the Ktribe T1, it gives the base, rod, and diffuser support their characteristic reflective finish and dimensional stability over time.
How does the double-diffuser design affect the quality of light?
The transparent outer globe allows the lamp's form to remain visually open, while the opal inner diffuser softens and distributes the light source. The combination produces a warm, ambient glow that appears to float within the globe rather than emanate from a fixed point, reducing glare while preserving the lamp's sculptural presence.
What kind of spaces is the Ktribe T1 best suited to?
Its diffused, ambient output and refined silhouette make it well suited to bedside tables, reading areas, and hospitality environments where atmospheric light is prioritized over task illumination. The lamp's scale and polish also make it a considered choice for design-forward living rooms and hotel suites.
Is the Flos Ktribe T1 part of a larger collection?
Yes. Starck designed the Ktribe collection to span multiple formats, including pendant and floor lamp versions, each sharing the same double-diffuser logic and Zamak hardware. The collection allows a consistent visual language across a space at different scales.
Who is Philippe Starck and what is his relationship with Flos?
Philippe Starck is one of the most prolific industrial and product designers of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, known for work that treats objects as cultural propositions rather than purely functional solutions. His collaboration with Flos spans decades and has produced some of the brand's most recognized pieces, with Ktribe among the more conceptually focused of their joint projects.
