Sunlight filters through mature trees, washes across pale travertine, and disappears into a sequence of courtyards and sheltered pavilions. Set within five acres of verdant parkland in Atherton, Northern California, the Selby Lane Residence unfolds as a thoughtful exploration of architecture, landscape, and the rhythms of daily life.
Conceived by Sophie Goineau as a dialogue between architecture, interior architecture, and landscape, the residence is shaped by harmonious proportions, material continuity, and a fluid relationship between openness and retreat. Arranged predominantly on a single level, interconnected volumes stretch gracefully across the site, framing gardens, courtyards, and carefully composed views that invite the surrounding landscape into everyday experience.

Originally designed by Curt Cline of Modern House Architecture, the existing structure possessed what Goineau describes as a restrained modernist clarity, an underlying architectural order that became the project's point of departure. Building upon that foundation, she recomposed the residence through a careful interplay of mass and void, light and shadow, enclosure and openness. The resulting architectural language feels both rigorous and welcoming, guided by enduring principles of proportion, material expression, and spatial experience rather than stylistic trends.
Throughout the residence, Luminaire and Interni played a pivotal role in extending this vision into the realm of daily living. Through a carefully curated selection of furnishings, each piece contributes to the home's broader architectural narrative while reinforcing a sense of continuity across interior and exterior spaces. Rather than existing as independent objects, the furnishings participate in the atmosphere of the residence, complementing its materials, scale, and quiet sense of permanence.

The project evolved over several years and took an unexpected turn after severe winter rains necessitated a complete renovation of the interiors. What began as a challenge became an opportunity to rethink the home from the inside out, refining openings, circulation, and spatial relationships while introducing a renewed emphasis on natural light, material character, and architectural coherence. The resulting composition balances shelter and openness with remarkable subtlety, creating spaces that feel grounded, serene, and deeply inhabitable.
This sensibility is perhaps most evident in the material palette. Warm woods from the teak family, softly textured concrete, terrazzo, travertine, and understated metallic accents create a rich tactile experience that feels at once refined and approachable. Integrated millwork, continuous ceiling planes, and meticulously resolved junctions blur the distinction between architecture and furnishing, allowing materials to flow seamlessly throughout the residence and reinforcing the home's enduring character.

Inside, warmth and illumination define the primary living spaces. Wood-clad walls lend richness and depth, while expansive glazing frames the greenery beyond, allowing shifting patterns of daylight to animate the interiors throughout the day. At the center of the room, Paola Navone's Panama Bold sofa anchors the space with its generous proportions and tactile presence. Nearby, the travertine Materic coffee table and the graceful silhouette of the Greene armchair contribute texture, balance, and visual harmony.
The dining area continues the architectural rhythm through GamFratesi's Voyage chairs, whose elegant profiles introduce a sense of formal lightness while echoing the restraint and precision of the surrounding architecture. In a more intimate sitting room, Monica Armani's Allure O' table and Flair O' seating bring graphic clarity to the composition, integrating effortlessly within the home's disciplined aesthetic. The bedroom offers a quieter expression of the residence's design philosophy, where the Landscape Chaise Longue provides a contemplative focal point within a setting defined by calm proportions, comfort, and stillness.
Guided by a profound understanding of construction, proportion, light, and materiality, Sophie Goineau has created a home that reveals itself gradually over time. Sunlight moves across textured surfaces, courtyards invite moments of pause, and carefully framed views maintain a continual connection to the landscape beyond. Every space feels intentional yet effortless, composed yet deeply livable. The Selby Lane Residence stands as a testament to the enduring power of thoughtful design, demonstrating how architecture, interiors, and furnishings can come together to create a home that feels both deeply personal and timeless.
