Cho Light
Made by Established & Sons
Designed by Dimitri Bähler
Dimitri Bähler drew on the quiet intelligence of Japanese Washi paper to create the Cho Light, a floor lamp that holds its ground through lightness rather than mass. The crumpled off-white shade diffuses its LED source into a soft, ambient glow, while the carbon-fiber rod reduces the structural presence to near nothing.
Carbon fiber, a material more often associated with aerospace and motorsport, is repurposed here for its slenderness and its capacity for subtle movement. When touched, the stem yields gently, animating the form in a way that reads as alive rather than mechanical.
Available in two heights, Cho works equally well beside a low lounge chair or standing in an open corner. The dimmable low-voltage LED source gives the lamp a full range of atmospheric output, from candlelit warmth to calm reading light. The palette stays deliberately restrained, keeping attention on texture, proportion, and the quality of the light itself.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Washi paper and why is it used in lighting?
Washi is a traditional Japanese handmade paper produced from plant fibers, prized for its strength despite its thinness. In lighting, its translucency distributes light evenly and softly, eliminating harsh spots or glare, while its natural texture gives each shade a subtle, individual character.
Why does the Cho Light use a carbon-fiber rod?
Carbon fiber offers an exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, allowing the stem to remain extraordinarily slender without sacrificing structural integrity. Its slight inherent flexibility also gives the lamp a delicate, responsive quality when touched, which is central to the design's expression.
Who is Dimitri Bähler?
Dimitri Bähler is a Swiss designer whose practice spans furniture, objects, and lighting, often exploring the boundary between industrial production and poetic restraint. His work for Established & Sons reflects a consistent interest in material contradiction, pairing advanced manufacturing techniques with references drawn from craft and natural form.
What design sensibility defines Established & Sons?
Established & Sons is a London-based design brand founded to champion progressive design by commissioning work from both established and emerging voices. The brand publishes pieces that treat furniture and lighting as cultural objects, prioritizing authorship, material specificity, and long production cycles over trend-driven output.
Is the Cho Light suitable for low-light or atmospheric interiors?
The Cho Light's dimmable LED source makes it well suited to interiors where atmosphere takes precedence over task lighting. Its diffused, omnidirectional glow is particularly effective in bedrooms, reading nooks, or any space where the quality of ambient light carries as much weight as the object itself.
