Progettata da Gerrit T. Rietveld nel 1918, la Red and Blue Chair non nacque come mobile, ma come argomento reso fisico. Emergeva da De Stijl, il movimento olandese che proponeva di ridurre ogni forma agli essenziali geometrici e alle relazioni primarie, e rimane una delle più chiare espressioni di quella dottrina mai realizzata in tre dimensioni.

La costruzione è deliberata. Un telaio di elementi in faggio massiccio si interseca senza fondersi, ogni elemento preserva la propria identità all'interno dell'insieme. Il pannello posteriore piatto in rosso laccato, la seduta in nero, gli elementi strutturali in giallo: il colore non è applicato qui come decorazione ma come diagramma di logica spaziale. Ogni piano si annuncia.
