Gerrit Rietveld concepì la Zig Zag nel 1934 come un atto di radicale riduzione. Un unico piano continuo di legno, piegato a forma di Z rovesciata, costituisce l'intera sedia. Nessuna gamba. Nessuna struttura. La seduta a sbalzo mantiene la sua forma grazie all'integrità del materiale e alla precisione dei giunti a coda di rondine a vista all'intersezione posteriore di seduta e schienale.

Mentre la precedente Red Blue Chair di Rietveld annunciava la sua costruzione attraverso il colore, la Zig Zag parla attraverso la venatura e la geometria. Giunse al culmine dell'indagine del movimento De Stijl sulla forma elementare, e la sua autorevolezza si è approfondita solo con il tempo.
