Ingo Maurer was born on May 12, 1932 on Reichenau Island in Germany and became one of the most influential figures in contemporary lighting design. After studying graphic design in Munich and working in New York and San Francisco as a freelance designer, he returned to Germany in the early 1960s and founded his own studio, Design M, later renamed Ingo Maurer GmbH. From his earliest iconic piece, Bulb, to his later experimental works, Maurer reimagined light as a material of expression rather than just function and gained the nickname “poet of light” for his visionary approach.
Over his long career, Maurer created lighting that combined innovation, craftsmanship, and wit, producing objects and systems that challenged conventions and invited wonder. His work was included in major museum collections including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and he was recognized with international honors. Maurer also designed installations for public spaces and collaborated with cultural institutions around the world. He passed away in Munich in 2019, leaving a legacy of lighting that continues to inspire designers and collectors globally.
