Achille Castiglioni was born in 1918 in Milan, Italy, into a family of architects. He studied architecture at the Politecnico di Milano and went on to become one of the most influential figures in 20th-century industrial and lighting design. Castiglioni’s work was marked by a spirit of curiosity and experimentation, transforming ordinary materials and forms into clever, functional solutions that often revealed an element of surprise or delight.

Throughout his career, Castiglioni collaborated with his brothers Livio and Pier Giacomo, and later with other designers and manufacturers including Flos, Artemide, Zanotta, Alessi, and Cassina. His creations, such as the Arco floor lamp, Snoopy lamp, Toio lamp, and Mezzadro stool, have become design classics admired for their ingenuity, simplicity, and enduring appeal. He taught at the Politecnico di Milano for many years, influencing generations of designers, and received numerous awards for his contributions to design. Castiglioni passed away in 2002, leaving a legacy of objects that continue to inspire with their wit, intelligence, and thoughtful functionality.
