The clamp is the structural and aesthetic heart of the design. Rather than hiding the mechanism that holds the upholstery in shape, Afra and Tobia Scarpa made it the central visual element, a deliberate inversion of conventional furniture construction that earned the Soriana the Compasso d'Oro in 1970.

The ecru denim upholstery is drawn from a sustainable fabric with a cultural history rooted in craft and utility. Applied to the Soriana's generous, sculpted form, it shifts the chair's register toward the tactile and the grounded, offering a new reading of a canonical design without altering its underlying architecture.

The Soriana was designed by Afra and Tobia Scarpa, an Italian husband-and-wife partnership whose work consistently explored the relationship between structure, material, and the body. The chair was introduced in 1969 and has been produced by Cassina ever since.

The Soriana is a residential design at its core, conceived around domestic comfort and sculptural presence. Architects and designers have placed it in hospitality and cultural settings where an iconic, collectible piece is appropriate, though fabric specifications for contract use should be confirmed with a Cassina representative.

The broad, enveloping form is achieved not through a rigid internal frame but through the tension created by the metal clamp pulling the upholstered shell into shape from below.
