A Danish furniture designer known as the "Master of the Chair," celebrated for warm modernism, masterful woodworking, and designs that look right from every angle.
Hans J. Wegner was born April 2, 1914, in Tonder and became one of the most influential figures of Danish Modern. He designed primarily in wood and built a reputation for chairs that feel simple at first glance, but reveal careful engineering, joinery, and proportion up close. Across a long career, he created an extraordinary number of furniture designs and helped set the global standard for Scandinavian craftsmanship and comfort.
Wegner worked with leading Danish manufacturers, including a long-running partnership with Carl Hansen, where several of his most iconic chairs remain in production. His work is widely collected and continues to define what many people mean when they say "timeless design." He died January 26, 2007, in Copenhagen.
