Sedia Beugel

The I Maestri collection is Cassina's program of faithful reissues of furniture designed by pivotal twentieth-century architects and designers, including Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand, and Gerrit Rietveld. Each piece is produced under license and adheres to the original design specifications, preserving both the proportions and the material intent of the source work.

The Beugel Chair is a product of De Stijl, the Dutch avant-garde movement founded in 1917 that sought to reduce form to its essential elements: line, plane, and primary color. Rietveld was one of its key figures, and his furniture consistently translated those principles into three-dimensional objects.

The Beugel Chair functions as both. Cassina's reissue is constructed to contemporary production standards, making it a durable and usable side or accent chair. Its historical significance and formal economy also make it a compelling presence in a collection context, particularly alongside other works from the modernist canon.

The frame is formed from bent steel tube, a material choice that was progressive in 1927 and central to Rietveld's structural idea. The seat and backrest are wood, held within the steel frame in a relationship that makes both materials distinct and readable rather than unified into a single mass.

Where the Red and Blue Chair uses painted wood and bold color to express De Stijl's compositional principles, the Beugel Chair pursues a more restrained, almost austere approach. Steel replaces wood as the primary structural element, and color is suppressed in favor of material contrast. The result is a later, more industrially inflected statement from the same design sensibility.
