Enzo Catellani iniziò a intrecciare il Fil de Fer quasi vent'anni prima che entrasse a far parte della collezione Catellani & Smith. Originariamente concepito per una commissione privata mai completata, il pezzo rimase nel suo laboratorio, occasionalmente illuminato, incantando silenziosamente chiunque lo incontrasse. Quella magia persistente fu una ragione sufficiente per continuare a perfezionarlo.
Il risultato è una sfera di filo di alluminio modellato e intrecciato, illuminata dall'interno da piccole lampadine la cui luce filtra attraverso l'intreccio metallico aperto. La luce che proietta è suggestiva piuttosto che funzionale, una morbida diffusione che cambia con la densità di ogni forma fatta a mano. Nessuno dei pezzi è identico.
