Poltrona Tou Club

"Tou" is the Japanese word for rattan. Naoto Fukasawa used the name to root the chair in the material's cultural identity rather than treat it as a stylistic reference. The naming reflects his broader practice of finding meaning in the relationship between an object and its origin.

The chair is designed for covered outdoor settings, as well as indoor use. The teak frame is sustainably sourced and naturally resistant to moisture and weathering, while the hand-woven rattan body performs best when sheltered from direct rain and prolonged sun exposure.

The rattan body is hand-woven, continuing a craft tradition that predates industrial furniture production by millennia. This method produces a surface with natural variation in texture and tension, which distinguishes it from machine-processed wicker alternatives.

Naoto Fukasawa is a Japanese industrial designer whose work is characterized by a rigorous reduction of form to its essential gesture.
