In 1936, Alvar Aalto entered a series of glass vases into the Karhula-Iittala Glass Design Competition and won first prize. The form was unlike anything else being made at the time: organic, asymmetrical, drawn from the undulating motion of water. "Aalto" means wave in Finnish, and the shape carries that origin without literalism.

What made the design revolutionary was its restraint. While decorative objects of the era leaned toward ornament, Aalto's vase proposed that a functional form could hold its own as an object of cultural significance. It did. The vase entered museum collections, design histories, and everyday homes with equal ease.
