Nuage À Plots

Charlotte Perriand spent decades studying the architecture of storage. Her Nuage family of bookcases, conceived in the mid-1950s, grew from a conviction that containers could be as spatially generous as the rooms they inhabited. Multiple editions were produced by the celebrated Parisian gallery Galerie Steph Simon between 1956 and 1970, and those originals remain among the most coveted pieces in the collector market today.

Nuage à Plots is a floor-standing or suspended wall bookcase built from shelves and vertical elements joined by tie rods and plain bearings. The structure is honest in its logic: each component declares its role, and the whole reads as a kind of ordered composition, open to light and air rather than closed against it.

Cassina reintroduced the Nuage series in 2012 as part of its I Maestri collection, which preserves the authorized reissues of works by architects whose ideas continue to shape the discipline. Perriand, who collaborated closely with Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret before forging her own singular practice, brought a rigorous functionalism to every storage problem she addressed. The Nuage à Plots carries that sensibility without apology.
