Cased glass involves encasing one layer of molten glass within another, building depth and color through successive applications. In Buds 1, five layers are used, which gives the diffuser its characteristic warmth and even luminosity when lit.

Buds was designed by Rodolfo Dordoni, a Milan-based architect and designer known for his restrained, classically proportioned approach to furniture and lighting. He has collaborated with several leading Italian manufacturers across his career.

Its diffuse, glare-free light and compact scale make Buds 1 well suited to intimate settings. The glow is ambient rather than directional, so it works best alongside a dedicated task light if reading is the primary use.

Foscarini produces the Buds series in multiple sizes, with Buds 1 being the smaller table lamp format. Larger iterations exist as floor and suspension versions, sharing the same hand-blown glass diffuser but scaled for different spatial roles.

Foscarini is a Venetian brand with deep roots in Italian glass culture, and several of its pieces draw on Murano glassblowing traditions. The hand-blown components in designs like Buds reflect that heritage of artisanal production.
