Nel 1962, Achille Castiglioni pose una domanda che avrebbe ridefinito l'illuminazione domestica: una lampada da terra poteva illuminare un tavolo da pranzo senza la necessità di un lampadario a soffitto? L'Arco è la sua risposta, e rimane uno degli oggetti più importanti del design italiano del dopoguerra.
La base è un solido blocco di marmo di Carrara, con gli angoli smussati con delicata cura. Il suo peso è intenzionale, un contrappunto all'arco slanciato sopra. Un singolo foro praticato nella pietra accetta un manico di scopa, rendendo il pezzo trasportabile nonostante la sua massa. Questo dettaglio è puro Castiglioni: arguzia e rigore, inseparabili.
Lo stelo si erge in acciaio inossidabile lucido, regolabile in lunghezza per adattarsi allo spazio. Alla sua estremità, un diffusore in acciaio inossidabile perforato diffonde la luce con sobria precisione. Nulla è decorativo. Ogni elemento risolve un problema.
