Moon landing
Made by Zanotta
Designed by Achille Castiglioni

Domande Frequenti
Who designed the Allunaggio stool and when?
Allunaggio was designed by brothers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni for Zanotta in 1965. The Castiglioni studio was among the most influential forces in postwar Italian design, known for work that combined formal rigor with humor and conceptual depth.
What materials is the Allunaggio made from?
The seat is cast in aluminum alloy and finished in a grass-green paint. The legs are steel, and the feet are natural polyethylene, a material chosen to provide stability and durability on outdoor surfaces.
Is the Allunaggio suitable for outdoor use?
Yes. The stool was specifically designed for outdoor environments. Its aluminum seat, steel structure, and polyethylene feet are all selected for their resilience in exterior conditions including terraces and garden settings.
What does the name Allunaggio mean?
Allunaggio is the Italian word for moon landing. The name reflects the design's futurist spirit and the cultural moment of the mid-1960s, when space exploration was reshaping aesthetic ambitions across architecture, product design, and art.
Why is the Allunaggio considered a design icon?
Its status comes from the Castiglioni brothers' ability to distill a cultural idea, the space age, into a functional object of striking economy. Produced continuously by Zanotta since 1965, it represents a rare convergence of wit, formal invention, and manufacturing precision.
