AJ52 Society Table

In 1952, Arne Jacobsen received a commission from the American-Scandinavian Foundation to furnish its New York office. The AJ52 Society Table was his answer: a writing desk that distills the discipline of Bauhaus thinking into something unmistakably Scandinavian in its restraint and warmth.

The desk is built around a tubular stainless steel frame of near-architectural slenderness. A fine-grained leather writing surface wraps tightly over the top, its edges pulled clean and taut. Suspended beneath the table on slim metal tubes, a six-drawer unit in walnut veneer appears to float rather than sit, giving the piece its characteristic sense of weightlessness.

Jacobsen integrated a conical desk lamp in brushed stainless steel and a glass-fronted letter compartment in wood and veneer directly into the composition. These are not accessories appended to a desk. They are resolved elements of a single, continuous design gesture.

• Walnut with oil finish and veneer drawer unit, suspended from tubular steel
• Fine-structured leather writing surface
• Brushed stainless steel conical lamp, integrated into the frame
• Glass-fronted letter compartment in wood and veneer
• Six-drawer suspended storage unit

Carl Hansen & Søn produces the AJ52 in close dialogue with the Jacobsen archive, preserving the proportions and material logic that made the original so quietly authoritative. Conceived at the height of Jacobsen's career, the desk remains a precise record of mid-century Danish modernism at its most rigorous.
