Ant™ Chair, 4 Legs - 3101
Made by Fritz Hansen
Designed by Arne Jacobsen
In 1952, Arne Jacobsen set out to solve a practical problem: a lightweight, stackable chair for the canteen of the Novo pharmaceutical factory outside Copenhagen. What emerged was the Ant, a single shell of moulded veneer pressed into an organic form that reads, from above, as the silhouette of its namesake insect.
The Ant was among the first chairs to treat the seat and back as one continuous surface, a feat made possible by Fritz Hansen's mastery of cold-press lamination. That technical ambition gave the chair its characteristic waist, a pinched transition between seat and back that distributes weight gracefully and lends the piece its unmistakable identity.
The four-leg version (model 3101) is the original configuration. Steel tube legs, slender almost to the point of contradiction, carry the shell with a lightness that the form seems to demand. Available in moulded veneer or lacquered wood, the chair bridges residential dining rooms and institutional settings with equal composure.
