CH29P Sawbuck Chair

Hans J. Wegner drew from the most elemental of workshop forms - the sawhorse - to conceive the CH29P Sawbuck Chair in 1952. The crossed rear legs echo the geometry of the carpenter's buck, transforming a purely functional reference into a composed structural gesture that defines the chair's silhouette from every angle.

The seat widens considerably toward the front, distributing weight naturally and accommodating a range of postures without sacrificing the chair's spare visual line. The deeply curved back follows the body rather than dictating to it. Together, these proportions reflect Wegner's belief that comfort and form are not competing concerns - they arise from the same discipline.

Produced by Carl Hansen & Søn in FSC-certified oak with an oil finish, the chair's joinery is as considered as its outline. The upholstered seat - available in leather, including Thor 301 - introduces warmth and material contrast without interrupting the wood's quiet authority.

Withdrawn from production in the 1970s, the CH29P was reintroduced decades later at the initiative of Wegner's own family. Its return required no revision. The chair arrived again exactly as it had left - an argument in wood for the idea that great proportion does not age.
