Veliero Bookcase
Made by Cassina
Designed by Franco Albini
The Veliero bookcase, an icon amidst the Italian design hallmarks, was created by Franco Albini as a one-off in 1940 for his home in Milan. Like almost no other project, this piece expresses a fundamental concept of the Milanese designer: lightness. Highly experimental, the tensile structure of the Veliero is a combination of technique and poetry, exploiting the technical characteristics of the materials to the full potential.
The concept of “unstable equilibrium” is reached through apparent simplicity and the reduction to a minimum of components. The “Veliero” bookcase recalls the stays of a sailing boat in its shape and structure. In 1940, it was a challenge for Franco Albini himself, who made just one model expressly for his own home. In 2011, it was a challenge for Cassina, which has revived this model by solving the structural aspects with a re-issue that keeps the original model’s lightness and transparency intact.
