Franco Albini

Born 1905 | Italy

Franco Albini was born on October 17, 1905 in Robbiate, near Milan, Italy. He studied architecture at the Politecnico di Milano, graduating in 1929, and soon became one of the key figures of the Italian Rationalist movement. Early in his career he worked with Gio Ponti before opening his own studio in Milan in the early 1930s. Albini developed a design language defined by clarity, structural honesty, and the intelligent use of materials, combining modern industrial techniques with traditional Italian craftsmanship.

Throughout his career Albini worked across architecture, furniture, lighting, and exhibition design, producing objects that balanced technical precision with visual lightness. He collaborated with important manufacturers including Cassina, Brionvega, Arflex, Arteluce, and Poggi. Many of his designs became icons of Italian modernism, including the Veliero bookcase, the Luisa chair, and the Fiorenza armchair. Albini received three Compasso d’Oro awards and taught design at the Politecnico di Milano, influencing generations of architects and designers. He passed away in Milan on November 1, 1977, leaving a lasting legacy in modern architecture and design.
