FF. SPINE - Wall-mounted

FF. Spine is a wall-mounted suspended bookcase designed by Formafantasma for Cassina, built around a rigorous commitment to solid wood as a finite material. Its internal structure uses epoxy powder-coated steel tubing, while each visible element - support bracket, upright, and shelf - draws from solid wood, MDF sandwich construction, and aluminum, composing a quiet geometric vocabulary that reads as both precise and warm.

The design's modularity is its governing logic. Each unit pairs a support bracket with an upright and shelf, and the configuration of these elements is arranged to maximize the usable yield of a single tree trunk, varying grain orientation and cut to reduce waste and reveal the wood's natural range. No two assemblies are identical in texture.

Formafantasma, the Milan-based studio founded by Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin, approaches design as a form of material and cultural inquiry. Their practice consistently interrogates how objects are made, from whom, and from what - questions that FF. Spine answers with the discipline of high-level cabinetmaking and a geometry that refuses ornament in favor of structural honesty.
