Ayno Lamp
Made by Midgard
Designed by Stefan Diez
The Ayno is the first new lamp design from Midgard since the 1950s, and it arrives with a clarity of purpose that honors the German manufacturer's industrial heritage. Stefan Diez, one of the most rigorous product designers working today, stripped adjustable lighting down to its essential mechanics.
At the heart of the Ayno is a fiberglass rod held under tension by the lamp's own cable. That tension bends the rod into a precise arc, eliminating the need for joints entirely. Two sliding adjustment rings, one at the top and one at the bottom, allow the arc's radius to shift and the light to follow. A swivel at the shade completes the range of fine adjustment.
- Jointless construction driven by cable tension
- Fiberglass rod bent to the desired position via two sliding rings
- Swiveling shade head for fine directional control
- Designed with sustainability and reduced material complexity in mind
The result is a lamp that moves like a gesture rather than a mechanism, holding its position through physics rather than hardware. Diez's collaboration with Midgard demonstrates what restraint in engineering can produce when it is treated as a design value in itself.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does the Midgard Ayno adjust without joints?
The Ayno uses a fiberglass rod held under tension by the lamp's own cable. Two sliding rings at the top and bottom of the rod vary the arc's radius, directing the light without any traditional pivot joints.
Who designed the Midgard Ayno lamp?
The Ayno was designed by Stefan Diez, a Munich-based industrial designer known for his rigorous, system-driven approach to objects and furniture. The Ayno is his first collaboration with Midgard.
What is Midgard's design history?
Midgard is a German lighting manufacturer with roots in the early twentieth century, originally producing industrial task lighting. The Ayno represents the brand's first entirely new lamp form since the 1950s.
What materials is the Ayno lamp made from?
The arm is a fiberglass rod, chosen for its flexibility and strength under tension. The design prioritizes reduced material complexity, using the cable itself as a structural element.
Is the Ayno suitable for use as a reading or task lamp?
Yes. The Ayno's adjustable arc and swiveling shade head allow precise directional control, making it well suited to reading, drafting, or any task requiring focused, repositionable light.
