Born 2007 | United Kingdom
Raw Edges was founded in London in 2007 by Israeli designers Yael Mer and Shay Alkalay after they completed master's degrees in Product Design at the Royal College of Art. Their complementary perspectives shape the studio's distinctive language: Mer often explores how flat materials can become curved, functional forms, while Alkalay is drawn to movement, mechanisms, and the ways objects react when used. Together, they develop products, limited editions, furniture, flooring, and spatial installations through hands-on experimentation with geometry, materials, texture, and color.
Raw Edges began collaborating with Established & Sons in 2008, at the start of the studio's international career. Their Stack drawer unit challenged conventional storage with a staggered tower of colorful drawers that open from both sides, becoming one of the brand's defining designs and entering major museum collections. The partnership has since expanded through projects including Wall to Wall flooring, Side Stack, Plates Shelving, and GridWork. Across these works, Raw Edges reconsiders familiar typologies through modularity, movement, visual rhythm, and a sense of discovery.
