Kaare Klint

Born 1888 | Denmark

Kaare Klint was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1888 and grew up in an architectural environment as the son of architect Peder Vilhelm Jensen-Klint. Rather than pursuing style for its own sake, he developed a methodical approach based on proportion, ergonomics, function, and the analysis of historical furniture types. Designs such as the Faaborg Chair of 1914 and the Safari Chair of 1933 demonstrate his ability to refine traditional forms into elegant, highly functional objects.

In 1924, Klint co-founded the School of Furniture Design at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, where his teaching influenced generations of designers including Hans J. Wegner, Mogens Koch, Arne Jacobsen, and Poul Kjærholm. He also played a central role in the transformation of what is now Designmuseum Danmark, designing its interiors and furnishings in the late 1920s. Klint died in 1954, leaving a legacy that established craftsmanship, material integrity, and human-centered function as defining principles of Danish Modern.
